Mao was in full retreat in 1937 after leading fighters for ten years against the Nationalist troops of Chiang Kai-shek. During that time he wrote this document, intended as a detailed pamphlet, on guerrilla warfare. It remains as one of the most read books on guerilla warfare, describing the ways to wage a revolution in an underdeveloped land and influencing people like Ho Chi Minh and Che Guevara.
Mao found ways to turn the impoverished into a formidable force, turning weaknesses into strengths. He was able to use wit and cunning against superior firepower.
This was translated by General Samuel B Griffith of the US Marine Corps. He also opens the book with his own introduction.
