"Songmi's story is a powerful blend of heartbreaking sorrow and uplifting inspiration. Her resilience highlights the incredible endurance of the human spirit in the quest for freedom. Thank you, Songmi and Casey, for writing this remarkable book shedding light on the realities faced by North Koreans."
--Yeonmi Park, author of In Order to Live
"Greenlight to Freedom, written by Songmi Han with Casey Lartigue, is an eye-opener not only for people like me but also for those who know little about North Korea. As many others do, it seemed natural that North Koreans would thrive once gaining freedom. But Ms. Han's story, along with those of other North Korean refugees, makes it clear that freedom isn't enough. This book follows her life from famine to freedom."
--Thae Yong-ho, former North Korean diplomat and former member of South Korea's National Assembly
Like much of the North Korean population, Songmi Han was living in desperate poverty. As a young child, she and her family lived a life of dire hardship, and many meals consisted of little more than grass. Domestic abuse, long hours of grueling physical labor, emotional abuse, and hunger were her constant companions. School was out of the question and she, along with her mother, stole food to survive.
