This A4 book is written for parents of autistic (and other neurodivergent) school children and young people in education, who are experiencing signs of what is known as 'autistic burnout'. Autistic burnout is, in my opinion, 'one' of the main reasons why so many autistic students are not able to attend school or college. The problem is not autism or neurodivergence and certainly not your child or teenager; the problem is the education settings, the environments that are often designed very much with neurotypical students and staff in mind.
Autistic burnout can lead to a number of very serious emotional, psychological and physical symptoms; it can also lead to an extreme mental health crisis in some autistic people and is very often either misunderstood or unrecognised by professionals working with autistic people, including doctors, CAMHs, social workers, school staff and counsellors, etc.
This workbook seeks to explain what autistic burnout is, the main causes, triggers and the main indicators. It will help you look at how to help your autistic child or teenager experiencing burnout and how to negotiate what can be a very challenging journey. The book will help you decide what is best for them and gives tips on how to make home a place where they can heal. There is also a chapter looking at crisis and what the main factors might be for your child or teenager.
Foreword is written by Helen Edgar from Autistic Realms (teacher and ND parent).
